The main functions of ballast stone are as follows:
(1) Drainage;
(2) Facilitate track maintenance and repair operations, and calibrate the horizontal and vertical sections (planes) of the track;
(3) Enduring pressure from rail sleepers;
(4) Transfer the pressure from the rail sleeper to the lower structural layer;
(5) Provide larger particle gaps to store dirty materials.
